I am a contemporary, narrative fiber artist. I am very interested in the textiles, images, symbols and iconography of other cultures. Many of my art quilts and three dimensional shrines, books and vessels are tributes to the magic and mystery of women.
I paint with fabric. Like a painter, I design my pieces using the concepts of line, form, balance, color, and texture. My palette is made up of fabrics, threads and beads and my sewing machine and hand stitching needles are my brushes. My fabrics may be commercial cottons, silks or velvet; antique laces or silk neckties; fabrics which I have hand dyed myself and manipulated with various techniques like shibori, bleach discharge, printing, stamping, or transferring photographic images onto the fabric. My threads may be cotton, rayon or metallic or any variety of yarns and ribbons and the beads I use I have collected from many different places. I use glass beads, carved bone, crystals, old jewelry or any other found object which I can attach to my fiber pieces. I use paint, pigma pens and colored pencils to draw the faces on the people on my work.
Look in the ARTWORK section and you will find a good sampling of my artwork. Subjects range from Frida Kahlo and Day of the Dead, to African iand Asian images, to Goddesses and Pets, just to name a few.
I welcome your questions and comments and am always happy to work with you on commissions.
